In the 18th and early 19th centuries, shirts were fastened at the throat using thread buttons. Metal buttons tend to discolor fabric and bone or other hard material buttons were brittle and likely to crack of shatter during the rigors of laundering, but thread buttons would more easily survive the process which was, after all, intended for cleaning thread.

These buttons are made using a heavy linen thread which is wrapped into a thick coil and compressed tightly using buttonhole stitches. They are incredibly sturdy and will withstand great stresses without warping, so there is no need to worry about whether they will stay in their respective buttonholes!
